How to Stretch Scrub Pants: What You Can Realistically Change

There is no dependable home stretching recipe that turns an undersized pair of synthetic-blend scrub pants into the next size. Before soaking or pulling the fabric, identify what feels tight and whether the pants ever fit. A waistband adjustment, a manufacturer-approved care step, or an alteration may address a specific problem; none should be treated as a guaranteed size rescue.

Find out what actually needs more room

Try the pants dry, with empty pockets and your usual undergarments. Loosen a functioning drawstring fully before judging the waist. Then sit, take a comfortable step, and identify the area that restricts you. A tight elastic band, short rise, and narrow thigh are different problems.

If the pair never fit, compare a different size or cut while a return remains possible. If its fit changed after laundering, record the wash and dryer settings and measure the relaxed waistband, hip area, and inseam. A previously recorded measurement is more informative than comparing two different models.

Treat the care label as a limit

GINETEX explains that its care symbols specify the maximum permitted treatment. A washing-temperature symbol is not permission to use stronger heat to reshape clothing. Follow the label on your particular pair, including its drying and ironing instructions.

For example, the FIGS Dowa product page specifies cold washing inside out and low-temperature tumble drying. It does not provide instructions for enlarging the pants. Do not replace model-specific care directions with a hot-water, steam, or high-heat method from a general clothing tip.

What about conditioner, soaking, or pulling damp fabric?

The manufacturer care directions reviewed for this guide do not establish that a conditioner soak permanently enlarges synthetic-blend scrubs, restores lost inches, or produces a predictable new size. For that reason, this guide does not recommend a bath recipe, soak time, or stretching target.

GINETEX's hand-washing guidance distinguishes careful reshaping from rough handling: it advises against rubbing, pulling, and wringing during washing. Returning a washable item to its intended shape is not the same as forcing it beyond its original dimensions. Do not suspend weights from the hems or stretch the waistband over a chair as a sizing technique.

If an incorrect dryer setting changed the fit

Stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer with the style code, fabric label, original fit, and drying history. Ask whether it supports any recovery process for that exact garment. Without such guidance, do not promise yourself that another wash or a different drying method will reverse the change.

If the manufacturer supplies a permitted process, follow it exactly and evaluate the pants only after they are fully dry. Check comfort and seam condition as well as measurements. Temporary looseness while fabric is wet does not demonstrate a lasting correction.

Ask for a targeted alteration—or preserve an exchange

For a localized fit problem, an alterations professional can inspect the waistband construction and seam allowance before suggesting changes. Letting out a seam requires usable extra fabric beside the existing stitching; it cannot be assumed from the outside. Request an estimate and ask how the change would affect pockets, closures, and movement.

With new pants, check return conditions before washing or modifying them. FIGS' Happy Returns instructions, for example, require unworn, unwashed items with tags attached. Other sellers set their own conditions. When several areas are too tight, exchanging for a suitable size or shape is usually a clearer route than trying to enlarge the entire garment.
